Mustang Cold Air Intakes — GT 5.0, EcoBoost 2.3 & V6

On the 5.0L GT, an intake is about throttle response, a stronger V8 sound, and a few honest horsepower. On the 2.3L EcoBoost, cooler air feeds the turbo — some kits are marketed as adding real, measurable power. The V6 responds with sharper pickup. An open filter maximizes airflow and induction sound — the popular choice for a street Mustang. A sealed / closed-box intake shields the filter from hot engine-bay air for more consistent intake temps. Both are a big step up from the restrictive factory airbox.

Oiled cotton filters flow the most air but need occasional cleaning and re-oiling, and over-oiling can foul a MAF sensor. Dry filters are lower-maintenance. Both far outlast the paper factory filter.

On its own, expect a modest bump — a handful of horsepower — plus sharper throttle response and a stronger V8 sound. The bigger, more repeatable gains come when the intake is paired with a tune. On the 2.3L EcoBoost, some kits advertise larger gains (often quoted around 15–20 hp over the stock intake).

It depends on your engine and goal: match the kit to your 5.0L GT, 2.3L EcoBoost, or V6, then choose an open filter for the loudest sound and max airflow or a sealed / closed-box kit for more consistent intake temps. The factory Mustang uses a sealed airbox that draws cooler air, but it's built for quiet operation and emissions, not maximum flow. An aftermarket cold air intake opens that up for better airflow, more induction sound, and sharper response.

The main trade-offs are more intake noise and, with oiled filters, occasional cleaning/re-oiling (over-oiling can foul a MAF sensor — a dry filter avoids that). An open element can also pull warmer under-hood air in traffic; a sealed / closed-box kit avoids that.
